Ava giggled. “How exactly do you think you could defeat a zombie with a fan?”

“Um, I could tickle it to death?” said Lily.

They both snorted with laughter.

Lily put down the fan and then went over to the box of crystals that were still on the desk. She began to read the notes out as Ava hid the bandages under the shelf so her mum wouldn’t see them if she came in. “The magyck crystals contain ancient earth magic. Oh wow! Magic!” she breathed.

“Keep reading,” Ava urged.

Lily carried on. “The crystals each have their own energy field and powers, which can be used by those with an open mind. Their powers will be magnified when they are placed in the amulet, surrounded by the three stones of clear quartz…”

“What’s the amulet?” interrupted Ava.

“I guess it’s this,” said Lily, taking the necklace out of the box and holding it up. The triangular pendant hanging from it had had three clear crystals, one in each point of the triangle and a round space in the centre with little clips that looked just the right size for the crystals in the box. Lily read on. “Before being placed in the amulet, a crystal’s magyck should be activated by someone connecting their energy to it…”

“What does that mean?” interrupted Ava.

Lily shrugged. “I don’t know.” She continued to read. “Once in the amulet, the person wearing it will be able to direct the magyck, but beware! If the amulet is used by someone with an unfocused mind, the magyck may behave unpredictably. When a crystal’s magyck has been used up, it can be recharged by…” She broke off. “The next words are smudged.”

“Never mind.” Ava didn’t want to spend more time reading. “I vote we put a crystal into the necklace and see what happens. How about this one?” She picked out a pretty purple stone. “What does it do?”

Lily read the label and checked the notes. “That’s Amethyst. It’s the Manifestation Crystal.”

“What does that mean?” Ava asked, placing the stone in the centre of the pendant. There were three little clasps to hold it in place.

“I’m not sure,” said Lily. “Let me see…” She broke off as the purple crystal started to glow. “Oh my … wow!” she squeaked as it got brighter and brighter, throwing purple light around the gloomy room. Pepper barked in alarm and backed away.

“It’s proper magic!” breathed Ava. “Awesome!”

She put the necklace over her head and immediately felt as if she was sparkling too.
